Last Sunday, shortly after getting back into action after two weeks of being sidelined with an injury, Williams had a grand slam homer against the Browns' Bill Trotter, and in 1942 he nicked Dick Fowler of Philadelphia for a grand-slammer.

It was only a 45th "perfect day" for Ted since entering the big show in 1939—a comparatively small number considering the thousands of times the "Splinter" has gone to bat for the Red Sox.

That batting averages don't fatten on perfect days but are built up by numerous "two for four" or "two for five" afternoons or evenings is shown by a survey of Williams' record.

In his first year with the Red Sox, Ted hit .327, had five "perfect days." His first was four hits in four trips. Then, on August 8 in a doubleheader, he had three hits in as many trips in both games. His next best spot over those playing seasons has been St. Louis, where he has collected 25.

Of that total, Ted has belted 96 in Fenway Park. His campaign he had two more "three for three" days.

This season, through July 25, Ted has had seven perfect days—thrice having four hits in as many trips.

Counting those three times this season in which he has had as many as four hits in one game, Ted's total number of four or more hits in one contest is 17. He had three four-hit days in 1939, one in 1940, three in 1941, none in 1942, three in 1946, four in 1947.

land's Steve Gromek.

Last summer, on May 16, he homered with the bases loaded off St. Louis' Walt Brown.

On June 27 of this season Ted Williams hit his 213th home run of his 10-year career.
