Phillip Pierre, 30 who broke jail Monday night from the Agency jail at Dixon, was seriously wounded at Hot Springs when he was apprehended by a deputy sheriff during a break-in at a grocery store about 4 a.m.
He is now in a Missoula hospital being taken there following treatment at the Sanders county hospital.
A Sanders county special deputy said he fired a shotgun at Pierre when the latter failed to heed his command to drop his rifle when surprised at Buck's grocery. When Pierre went into a crouch, the officer fired from about 30 paces. Most of the buckshot hit Pierre in the upper part of the body, although part of it was deflected or absorbed by packages of cigarettes Pierre had stuffed in his shirt front.
Also in custody are Tony LaMoose, Larry Old Horn and Betty Parker, all Indians living near Dixon.
Pierre had broken jail at the agency earlier in the night, reportedly sawing several heavy iron bars with a hack saw. He was a prisoner in Ronan the night of July 4, but had been turned over to Indian authorities the next day.
