We hear from Woodstock, that on Monday the 4th of Jan. one Hannah Corbin, belonging to that place, was apprehended for forgery. & being brought before Nathaniel Child, & Samuel Chandler. Esq's; for trial, confessed that she had forged a note of hand of 6l. against Lt. Leonard of Killingly, and carried it to Mr. Pain, Merchant at the same time presenting him with an order from the said Leonard, to let her have Goods to the amount of said note, which order she confessed to have also forged. Mr. Pain, a little surprised that Lt. Leonard had not made application personally, asked her the reason, but being determined not to be catched by so tender a gin, he told him that Mr. Leonard had broke his leg.---Mr. Pain knowing Lt. Leonard to be good enough for the Money, furnished her with what she wanted. She then dressed herself in man's apparel, assumed the name of John Heart, went to Mr. Lemuel Morris and requested that he would entrust her with 6l. in Goods telling him she was the son of Mr. Abraham Skinner in the west society of Woodstock ; but being a stranger to him, he refused to trust her without a recommendation, she visited him a second and third time, and had forged a recommendation from Mr. Ebenezer Pain, but Mr. Morris began to be suspicious of the pretended Mr. Heart, and finally refused to let his goods go without cash.--.
Startled at being suspected by Mr. Morris, and fearing a discovery, resolved to make the best use of her time, she waited on her former friend Mr. Pain (still assuming the name of John Heart) and told him that Lt. Leonard was dead, and that she had come thither with an intention to marry Miss Hannah Corbin, that she intended to carry her down the country to live with his parents, till she should get matters in order for house-keeping, that Hannah had informed her of a note of hand and an order she left with him the said Pain, and as the man was dead that the note of hand was against, she was desirous that the affair should be settled before she left the parish, and that she being a stranger did not imagine that Mr.Pain would trust her without a recommendation, for which reason she had obtained one from Mr. Carter, Tavern Keeper in Dudley ; but unluckily for poor Hannah, a man happened to be in Mr. Pain's shop, who told- Mr. Pain that it was no other than Hannah Corbin who was then talking to him; on which the pretended Mr. Heart went off, but was followed, apprehended, and after the trial aforementioned, she was committed to Windham Goal.
