"Fifty Cents A Head."—One of the most intelligent and reliable gentlemen in the State, writing from the County of Halifax, informs us that during the registration in the town of Halifax, a man, claiming to be a guard, was placed at the door, who forbade negroes to enter unless they paid fifty cents to the Union League! If that was paid, they might register at once; if refused, registration was denied until all the members of the League were served. By this process, it is stated, some $500 were levied on the negroes.—Raleigh Sentinel.
