Full Text

A Starvation Country.—A former resident of Sacramento, writing from Melbourne, says that is the meanest country the sun ever shone on. He has been there six months without seeing ten dollars at a time, and means to leave the country as soon as he can raise shillings enough. He mentions Messrs. Sykes and Mellody, of Weaverville, who, he says, are doing a very good business.—The letter writer adds that the criminal "ducks" have blighted the country, and a crop of famished and dejected people are the consequence. His picture is very dark, and, perhaps, has an extra touch of gloom.
