KILLED IN HIS OWN HOME.

Citizen Murdered in Alabama Because he Was a Witness in a Criminal Trial.

OPELIKA, Ala., September 12. - Matthew Whaley, professional witness against illicit distillers, was shot and killed near Wedowee, Randolph county, last Friday night. Party went to his house and tried to get him to come out. On his refusal, quite a number of shots were fired into the building, and finally the building was set on fire. One of the party saw Whaley through a window, and fired at him, the ball taking effect in Whaley's brain. Not learned whether building and body were burned. No arrests as yet. Information is from United States Commissioner Smith.
