The Defection of Judge Hughes an Unpleasant Surprise.
RICHMOND, VA., September 25.-
Nothing since the campaign opened has thrown such a damper on Mahone's canvass as the announcement made yesterday by United States Circuit Judge Robert W. Hughes that he had determined to vote for McKinney, Tyler and Scott. Judge Hughes ranks as the ablest Republican in Virginia and was the Republican nominee for Governor in 1873. When President Harrison was making up his Cabinet he was prominently mentioned as a suitable man for Attorney General. This change from the Republican to the Democratic side is all the more surprising to the Mahoneites, as Judge Hughes was listed as a kicker. It is now hinted that Judge L. L. Lewis, president of the Court of Appeals of Virginia, will vote for McKinney. He was elected to his present position by the Mahone Legislature several years ago.
