NEW LONDON, March 23.

Wednesday Night last arrived here Capt. Chester, in 23 Days from St. Christophers, by whom we learn, That Gen. Hopson (at Guadaloupe) sent a party of 600 men with 5 pieces of Cannon and a Mortar into the Country against the Enemy, who having Intelligence thereof, one Grand Joseph (so called) late Commander of a French privateer, told the Governor that if he would grant him 800 such Men as he should pick, he would go out and cut the Dogs to Pieces; Monsieur, in pursuance of his Scheme, sallied out; but being timely discovered by the Party they immediately planted their Cannon in a Trench, and leaving a small Party to manage the same, the Remainder of the party advanced towards the Enemy, who came up very furious, upon which the English retreated towards their Cannon, and opening to the Right and Left for the Cannon to play, which being well charg'd, had the desired Effect by making a great Slaughter of the Enemy, and in particular of Grand Joseph, who was dispatch'd in three parts by a Bomb: Our Party then surrounded, killed and took the whole of the Survivors.
