THE COUNTY CONVENTION
To Be Held the Third Saturday in September.
The New Law Creates Assessors in Wilmington and Make the Office of the Recorder of Deeds Elective Instead of Appointive.
The primaries of the Democratic party of New Castle county, as previously announced in these columns, will be held on Saturday evening, September 10th, next.
At these primaries the legislative ticket and assessors will be nominated and at the same time delegates will be elected to the county convention, which will be held here on the preceding Saturday for the purpose of naming the nominees for recorder of deeds and coroner.
Four delegates will be elected from each of the five representative districts of Wilmington hundred and five from each of the remaining hundreds outside of this city, making seventy delegates in all.
Under the new law the office of the Recorder of Deeds, now held by Courtland Montgomery, is made an elective instead of an appointive office as heretofore.
The new law also creates an assessor in each of the representative districts of Wilmington. Heretofore there has only been three assessors.
As yet a feeling of general apathy appears to pervade the ranks of both the Democratic and Republican parties, but this is more noticeable in the latter than the former.
Under the leadership of Patrick Neary, chairman of the Democratic County Committee, the ill feeling that was manifested between the gold and silver men during the recent special election for State Senator has disappeared and the party is once more united.
The factional strife created has ceased and the question that at one time bade fair to disrupt the party has been buried in oblivion.
The chances of the Democratic party for success in New Castle county at the November election were never brighter and if the friendly feeling continues, which it will without a doubt, this county will be once more Democratic by as large a majority as ever.
Already a number of persons have been named for the respective offices to be filled and these will be announced as the time for the primaries gradually approaches.
For the past thirty-two years first one party and then the other would gain supremacy in this county and so far it has been a case of "hoss and hoss."
Now however this may be changed and the possibilities are that the Democrats will again be victorious at the coming election.
This will be made more easy for the reason that at present there appears to be a certain element of discord in the Republican ranks, notwithstanding the assertion that all difficulties have been buried by the Union and Regular forces, formerly bitter enemies of the worst kind.
Nothing will be left undone by the Democrats to score a victory and this in itself is sufficient to show that they are again united and walking in the path that they followed year after year when "we have conquered" had been perched on the banner of the followers of Jefferson.
