MUSIC AT EVE

When the sun has shed his farewell ray,
And twilight's calm draws near,
While gently wanes the fading day
With its mellow tints so clear
Oh! then, how deeply thrills each spirit-tone,
As music steals o'er the weary soul.

When not a voice or loving tone,
Falls gently on the ear,
When none are near to bear the moan,
Or see the swiftly falling tear,
Oh! then, at eve, how sweetly falls the tide
Of music's softly melting strain.

It wakes within a holy calm,
Methinks such peace as angels feel
It serves for every woe a balm,
And happy dreams around us steal.
Oh! who would not sit and list awhile
At music's voice at eventide?

MINNIE.
