SWINDLER NABBED.

La Crosse Police Arrest a Man for Passing Off Peruvian Dollars.

La Crosse, Wis., April 18.—[Special.]—The police bagged a swindler with a unique graft, operating with 39-cent Peruvian dollar-pieces. This coin is easily mistaken for Uncle Sam's regular standard coinage. The plan is to work mostly on saloons. The fellow orders a drink, throws down a Peruvian dollar, generally gets back his change for the full value of a dollar. If the fraud is detected, he picks up the South American dollar, saying that it is a pocket-piece and that he would not take $5 for it, and pays for his drink with good money. The same man operated extensively in Winona and Red Wing, Minn. The police got him here before he worked off many cheap coins. He gave his name as N. Rasmussen, saying he picked up Peru money on the Pacific coast.
