LONDON.
Nov. 15. Some people imagine, from the extraordinary articles of news that have lately been published, that our two great parties are going to change stations, one for the sake of obtaining a power, &c. and the other for the sake of acquiring popularity.
If this opinion should prove right, it will then remain to be decided by the wisest bargain. However, some Authors, Printers and Booksellers, may be inclined to apprehend, that universal contentment would prove a great hurt to trade, and therefore may consider it as a most lamentable evil. By others it is thought no such proceedings are like to happen, because there is a report spread of some extraordinary publications which are shortly to be made that will excite much attention; and which, if it should really prove the case, will furnish a good deal of profitable employment for the three very respectable professions abovementioned, by the great abundance of comments, replies and considerations, to which they may be likely to procure a good sale.
There are whispers spread that many of the votaries of the muses are exerting their talents for succeeding Mr. Churchill (if he should follow his antagonist) in the favour of his friends, and what may be more important, his lucrative reputation with the Public at large; which now, if it proves true, may occasion so much plastering and splashing with paper and ink as will make trade become brisk among the makers of those commodities, and their profits too large, provided they take care to deal only for ready money, if it is possible to be found; but if they venture to sell at a bad time, 'tis much to be apprehended that they may chance to make abundance of bad debts.
