Although the grand jury has consumed considerable time before arriving at its conclusions, it has shown from its report that the investigation into the recent riot was thorough and painstaking. The spirit of its report, as published in full in another column, will meet with the hearty indorsement of Roanoke's law-abiding citizens, who so sincerely regret the occurrence of those acts of disorder and brutality which took place on the night of September 20 and the morning of September 21.
Now that the indictments have been found, as it is claimed, against the foremost participants of the mob it will be necessary, if the future high name of our city is to be fostered and an example be set to prevent the reoccurrence of such acts of lawlessness, to submit the offenders to a speedy and fair trial by the courts and if found guilty, punishment should be meted out to each according to his deserts.
Roanoke has much at stake in this matter.
Conservative and thoughtful men have confessed that those acts of disorder did more to offset the prospects of the city's future growth and prosperity than has the recent financial disaster of the country. To partially redeem itself it will be necessary to show to the world that the city discountenances such work by bringing the perpetrators to justice.
