Full Text

How to make a three story house out of a two story.—The Broadway Marble House, No. 148, which is 25 feet wide by 40 deep, with brick walls 12 inches thick, has been raised from the ground, chimneys and all, to the height of seven feet in order to substitute another story. It is done by means of screws, under the direction of Mr. Simeon Brown. The process is so simple, and so slightly disturbs the building that a family might remain in it pursuing their usual avocations, with perfect composure. The weight of such a building is enormous; and the ease with which it is raised, furnishes an admirable illustration of the power of mechanism.
