Full Text

The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the State of California, the State Society of an order composed, as is well known, of surviving officers of the Union Army and Navy, asks Congress to erect at Gettysburg regimental monuments to mark positions occupied by the regiments of the regular army that fought in the battle. The regular troops were mostly in the Fifth Corps. They did efficient service in the battle. They came from no State, so that unless the government takes a hand that part of the line held by these regular regiments will appear to the visitor to have been unoccupied, and the work of making the battle lines will thus be left incomplete.
