RECORD IN DISTRICT COURT
TWENTY CASES TRIED AND TWENTY CONVICTIONS.
Of the Cases Tried Twelve of Them Were Against Bootleggers, and There Will Be That Many Less.
Another 100 per cent record has been hung up by District Attorney John A. Valls in the district court here, which should convince violators of the law that the "wild and woolly Rio Grande" is a dangerous place to make a getaway to after committing infractions of the law elsewhere, or in coming here to perpetrate something on the "unsuspecting public."
At the present term of the district court there were twenty-two cases on the criminal docket, and of these two forfeited bonds and the other twenty offenders were tried before juries and every one of them convicted, their terms ranging from sixty days in the county jail to five years in the state penitentiary, except in one instance, when a minor was given five years in the state training school for juveniles.
Of the twenty cases tried and convictions resulted, twelve of them were against violators of the liquor laws, and as a result there will be that many less bootleggers plying their nefarious trade in these parts. There were four cases tried against the McGaffeys and Baker for passing forged checks and swindling under $50 (the latter against Mrs. McGaffey) and while one of the joint cases was separated and divided into two cases before the court, there were convictions in all of them. The other four cases were against other parties for other crimes, but in all of them convictions resulted. The criminal docket was concluded for the term on Wednesday morning with the continuance of the case against Jose Casanova until the next term.
