Letters to Prisoners of War May Now be Arranged

Ann Arbor, Mich., May 4—Correspondence with prisoners of war in Japan and interned civilians is now possible through the International Red Cross Committee in Geneva, according to local Red Cross authorities and Norman H. Davis, national chairman of the committee. The Japanese government has agreed to abide by the rules of the Geneva and Cairo conventions concerning treatment of prisoners of war and postal regulations.

Addressing of such mail will first entail an affirmation by the Provost Marshal General that such persons believed to be prisoners are actually in the hands of the Japanese. No postage will be required on the letters which should be addressed, with the name of the prisoner, military title and branch of the service, formerly of Wake, Guam etc., American Prisoner in Japan in care of the International Red Cross Committee.

Miss Mary Elizabeth Day, student at the University, and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lennon have received word through the American Red Cross that members of their family are reported well in Manila. Miss Day, whose parents lived in Manila and were interned by the Japanese, learned that they are staying in the buildings of the University of Santo Tomas and that they are not mistreated, may use their own money and are permitted to use certain Manila restaurants. The Lennons, whose daughter, Hannah, arrived December 7 in Manila on her way to India in charge of three English refugee children, learned that she is safe and is also living in the University.
