OF OIL AND GAS
GEOLOGIST TELLS OF LOCATING STRUCTURAL CONDITIONS IN MONTANA
One unique aspect of the Cut Bank oil and gas field was explained as a highlight of a talk given recently in Great Falls by Gordon Campbell, geologist who located the discovery Kevin-Sunburst fields. The unique feature of the field, Campbell said, is that oil was found in the Fulton well on the Blackfeet Indian reservation at a point 700 feet structurally lower than the approximate top of the structure, a gas well on Headlight butte.
"In ordinary oil fields, production does not usually extend down the flanks of the structure for more than 100 or 200 feet from the high. The fact that Cut Bank production extends down the flank 700 feet gives it a distinction which, as far as I know, is enjoyed by no other oil field in the nation," the speaker said.
His talk was devoted principally to an exposition of the factors that aid geologists in locating structural conditions favorable for the accumulation of oil and gas.
