A tremendous land slide, involving the loss of several months' work, and property to a large amount, occurred at a gulch between this place and the Calaveras river. Mr G. H. Campbell, with his party, had gone to great expense in sinking a prospecting shaft and running a tunnel into the point of a very abrupt hill, and had after some three months' work, got every thing arranged in such a way that there would be no further difficulty in carrying on their operations, when the rains came on. All their mining tools and other appliances were left in the tunnel, the party having a cabin some eight or ten rods from its mouth During the night of the 12th, the persons sleeping in the cabin were awakened by a tremendous noise, and the jarring of the earth all around them. The rain was pouring down in torrents, and the noise having ceased, the inmates supposed there had been a shock of an earthquake. In the morning, however they were sadly undeceived. Not a trace of their tunnel remained; rocks, trees, and earth having slid down and covered every portion of it, even to the prospect shaft, the mouth of which was stopped up by a tree some three or four feet in diameter, which, sustaining its perpendicular position, had removed from its original bed a distance of five rods.- Calaveras Chronicle
