The Princess Governorants, in order to engage the English to discontinue taking our Merchant Ships, has proposed to the States of Holland to stop for a Time the Trade between this Country and France, it being better that Part of the State Should suffer than the Whole: But this Proposition has been rejected, especially by the City of Amsterdam, where the Propositions are so enlarged, that it is with Difficulty that they are kept from plundering the Houses of the English who are settled there. In Zealand it is the same; and the States of that Province have ordered the Captains of the Men Of War that convoy their Merchantmen, to resist Force by Force, if any Attempt is made to visit them. M. Hop, our Minister at London, has acquainted the States that the British Ministry is deaf to all his Remonstrances relative to the stopping Dutch Ships.
August 25. Mr. Yorke has had another Conference with the Deputies of the States General upon this Subject, and has declared to them, that Orders have been given to all the English Privateers to stop, visit, and seize all Dutch Ships bound to French Colonies, because the Ministry had certain Advice, that under Pretence of carrying Goods thither that were not contraband, they supplied them with Provisions and Stores.
