LETTER FROM POTOMAC CITY
Correspondence of the Richmond Whig.
POTOMAC CITY, June 10. -Potomac City is situated at the junction of the Fredericksburg and Potomac and the Fredericksburg and Alexandria railroads. Around this spot were erected the batteries of Evansport during the last war and which interfered so materially with the navigation of the Potomac.
Some four years ago a party of capitalists from New York, under the name of the Potomac Land and Improvement Company, began to make purchases here, and have continued until they now have in possession several thousand acres of land in the neighborhood. They have started "Potomac City," on the line of the Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad, near its junction with the Fredericksburg and Alexandria Railroad, and as an initiatory step, have erected a large hotel, the main building being forty by one hundred feet. The wing twenty-six by fifty. It contains one hundred rooms, and is under the management of a very obliging gentleman named Blinks.
It looks strangely to see a large hotel almost in the open fields with very few houses near it. but I was informed that just across the street the company intends to erect a block of buildings, and just back a church and school house.
There are signs of improvement already Where five or six years ago was scarcely a building, this large hotel has been built and some five or six other houses, three or four in process of erection and two brick kilns burning.
This point is expected to be the tide-water terminus of the Potomac and Ohio Railroad, which is the central to the tide-water line recommended by Senator Windom, who is chairman of the "Cheap Transportation Committee." and for the survey of which he recommended also an appropriation of $25,000. The engineers who are to make the survey are expected on in a few weeks. If the road is completed Potomac City will grow as rapidly as the Western cities have done.
