Gentlemen of the Committees of Vigilance,
Permit an humble individual in the Whig ranks to entreat you by every consideration dear to freemen to go to work. Wait not for the day of the election, but take hold now—lose not a day. Visit your neighbors, and if you find them lukewarm, excite them by displaying before them the vast interests at stake in the coming election, and impress upon them the importance of their individual vote. If you find them without the means of attending the election, provide that means for them. Do it early. If they should be ill, obtain for them a comfortable carriage, and sufficient attendants to bring them to the polls.
When the morning of the election arrives, be on the ground with the morning's sun. Pass around early and deposit tickets in the hands of faithful and trusty Whigs. When the polls are opened station faithful sentinels at the window, and guard with an honest zeal the proudest privilege of freedom—the right of suffrage. Be prepared to refute all the Locofoco lies that may be put in circulation on the eve of the election. It has been discovered that it is the intention of the friends of Mr. Polk, to put in circulation immediately preceding the election, perhaps on the morning, a letter purporting to be from him, expressing his determination to support the tariff as it is—in favor of a continuation of the Cumberland Road, and all other measures, which are popular in the North and West. Mr. Polk will not publish such a letter—he will not now give the lie to all his past life. Other reports will be started in regard to Mr. Clay—be prepared to rebut them. There is nothing so vile that the Locos will not resort to on that occasion. They will forge the name of Mr. Clay to anything that they think may be calculated to subserve their nefarious purposes.
The time has now passed for Mass Meetings of the people. The work is to be done now by actual service. Will you refuse that service to your country now when she is calling for aid and protection from every workshop in the land—from the forge of the blacksmith, the seat of the shoemaker—the board of the tailor—the manufacture—from the farm houses and bright fields of the agriculturalist.
To the Whigs, one and all, we say be active!—You are deeply indebted to your country for the great privileges you have for years enjoyed. Its government has protected your property from the hand of the incendiary—it has added to your store, and preserved your life, perhaps from the power of the lawless mob. Will you not then pay that debt? It may save you heavy cost—you and your children from peril, suffering, taxation to sustain an infamous war, and it will secure you years of prosperity. Be faithful to the cause of your country and freedom—to your constitution, your laws, and National honor.
Whigs of old Wayne, be your watchword, WORK and SUCCESS!
