Anecdote.—Soon after the election of Duff Green, as public printer, he felt so duty bound to go to the members who had supported him, and make his acknowledgements, to return his thanks, and pave his way, perhaps, to further emoluments. Among others, Duff called on General B— of the Senate, a high minded man, and one who knew Duff's merits and claims, and valued him accordingly. Duff found the General at the table writing; he looked over his shoulder, saw who it was, and continued his writing. Duff thought he was just finishing a sentence, and would soon address him, he felt though, that he might as well ask him to take a chair—but no, the General did not wish to be seated with Duff he continued his writing. Duff began to speak—the General looked over his shoulder. "I have called General," says Duff—but the General had re-commenced his writing—Duff felt his brother General was not very courteous, addressing him again, to little purpose; the General was not to be interrupted by him. At last, Duff spoke out—“General B—I, have called, Sir, to make my acknowledgements to you for the support you have given me in the late election of public printer, and, Sir, if”—but here the General turned short around, and without putting down his pen, and with a contemptuous and withering look, replied, "it was not you, Sir I served—it was the party." Duff said no more, but took the right about.—Newbern Spectator.
