Librarians Meet During GETA Confab

Librarians attending the state meeting of the Georgia Teachers and Education Association enjoyed along with the regular scheduled meetings of the association two meetings of the Librarians' Section of GTEA.

The first meeting was held in the David T. Howard High School Library.

William D. Beasley, Chairman of the Librarians' organization opened the meeting. Principal F. W. Sullivan and Miss Elizabeth Williams, assistant librarian brought words of welcome to the group. The program was introduced by Mrs. Helen Martin, itinerant librarian of Fulton County.

The librarians then enjoyed reviews of the Newbery and Caldecott Award books and runners-up for 1954 given by Mrs. Ethel M. Bolden and Miss Beulah Ewing both students at the Atlanta University School of Library Service. These reviews were followed by a talk on professional literature by Mrs. Pan-Sy Washington of the Atlanta University School of Library Service who also gave a full demonstration of professional-library tools.

The social hour which followed was in charge of Mrs. Edith W. Thomas, librarian, who served as the hostess assisted by a group of student library assistants.

The Friday meeting held at the Auburn Branch of the Atlanta Public Library was well attended. Two features were outstanding.

Dr. Virginia L. Jones, Dean of the Atlanta University School of Library Service addressed the group using as her subject "Current Library Trends." Mrs Anne L. McPheeters, head librarian of the Atlanta Public Libraries for Negroes, installed the following newly elected officers for the organization: Leroy C. Childs, Carrollton, Chairman; William H. Travis Macon, Co-chairman; Miss Betty Crockett, Keysville, Recording Secretary; Mrs. Ruby Dhye, East Point, Corresponding Secretary; Mrs. Sara Davis, Atlanta, Treasurer.

Special presentations were made by Mrs. Rose Ison to the outgoing Chairman Mr. William Beasley; the Treasurer, Mrs. Theodosia Theus and the guests. Mrs. Clara B. McCrary was presented to the group as one of the outstanding librarians of

She recently received the honor of having the branch library in Gainesville named in her honor - the "Clara B. McCrary Public Library."

At the business meeting which followed the organization made plans for setting up a scholarship fund in view of the recent region-wide organization of Student Library Assistants.

Buggs, Helen Burnett, Bessie Burwell, Sarah Butler, Sara Davis, Beatrice DeLoatch, Ruby Dhye, Rosebud Dixon, Beulah Ewing, Claudine Gaines, Rose Ison, Victoria W. Jenkins, Louise H. Lee, Mary McCoy, Helen Martin, E. E. Owens, Hazel Owens, Clara Poole, Arnieze Ramseur, Kathleen Scruggs, Lucile Smith, L. L. Smith, Mae Stafford. Essie Stewart. Edith Thomas, Mattie Thomas, Catherine Thompson, Bertha Ward, Pansy Washington: Messrs. Clarence Andrews, William Beasley, Leroy Childs. Luther Dennis, Frank Nelson, Enoch Roberts and William Travis.

Miss Margaret L. Walker, State Library Consultant stated that the meetings were well attended, the interest was high and the librarians returned to their respective schools and communities imbued with enthusiasm and information sufficient for rendering a greater service to mankind.
