Just where was the original Hungerford Tavern situated? Lack of an answer to that question, or rather, of positive proof of the answer, is delaying publication of a history of Rockville.
According to Miss Noma Thompson, who is compiling the history, there is a wealth of evidence proving that the original tavern was located on South Washington and Jefferson streets, the site of the Rockville Baptist Church. However, she adds, all this evidence is "circumstantial."
"What is needed," Miss Thompson said, "is some incontestable proof, such as a photograph of the original tavern showing a sign with the name "Hungerford" on the building, or some letter, newspaper or other written or printed record. Postcards printed some years ago with name beneath the picture will not do, nor is a mere statement of some other historian sufficient."
Miss Thompson has spent months of work in research for her history, months that can be terminated if one of our readers can help her with this problem. Replies should be addressed to her at Rockville, Md.
