The Express, in noticing the Lecompton candidates for State offices, at the ensuing election, failed, if we recollect aright, to mention the name of Col. Tompkins, of this city. Why this omission? Since that paper fails to do it, we will take the responsibility of saying that Col. Tompkins is a candidate and a formidable one at that, for the nomination for Lieut. Governor in the Lecompton State Convention. Is the Express afraid of Col. Tompkins, that it thus ignores his claims to the office? Is it the interest of that office in the State Printership nomination that thus makes that paper mum on Col. Tompkins' aspirations? We suspect so. The proprietors and conductors are aware that two or more nominations from the same county would not answer, and they therefore want to keep the Colonel in the back ground, so that they, or their representative, may obtain the nomination for State Printer. If we are rightly informed, this conduct is base ingratitude. Why? Because Col. Tompkins came forward and accepted the nomination of the Lecompton party of this city for Mayor, against his most serious objections, for he did not desire the painful prominence which it would give in so bitter and violent a fight. For the benefit of the Lecompton party in the county generally he took the nomination, spent his money and worked hard, but was defeated because he was on the wrong side. It was understood upon the outside that the Colonel would certainly receive for this piece of magnanimity and self sacrifice the cordial support of the Express people and the rest of the Lecompton workers in this county, for the Lieut. Governorship nomination before the Lecompton State Convention. But, it seems that all the Colonel's sacrifices go for nothing, and he is to be thrown overboard by the Express clique. It is no particular business of ours, and certainly of no personal interest, but we choose to let the people know how the thing stands as a mere matter of news, if for nothing else.
