The wife of Arthur O'Donnel had been for six years in a state of outrageous madness, and was given over by the Faculty:-
One evening he found means to loose herself from her bonds, and to escape from her confinement to the sea-shore, where in an instant, she endeavoured to put an end to her existence, by plunging from a rock into the ocean.
Very fortunately she was immediately missed by her eldest son, and followed by him: just as she had thrown herself from the rock he arrived, and being an excellent swimmer, plunged in to her assistance.
It was however near fifteen minutes before he could see his unhappy parent; but about the expiration of that time he observed the body floating among some rocks which projected from the mainland, with some difficulty he reached it, and with great labor swam it to the shore, apparently dead.
The prescriptions of the Humane Society were readily applied, and after an interval of two hours, signs of returning animation appeared; the process was continued, and in about twelve hours the Patient was not only restored to life, but, what is more wonderful, to the fullest possession of her natural reason.-
She is now perfectly well, and to the great help and happiness of her family, does all the duties of her domestic station.
