Full Text

SWITZERLAND.—The Protestants of Valais. We find the following in the New Zurich Gazette of the 22d inst.—"The council, at its sitting of the 12th, taking into consideration the painful position of the Protestants of the canton of the Valais, resolved to send a commissioner to intercede in a perfectly amicable manner with the council in their favor. M. Hottinger, Secretary of the council of Zurich, was the Commissioner appointed; but his mission produced no good effect, and the Council of the Valais persisted in its prohibition of all exercise, public or private, of Protestant worship in the canton. Consequently, the only hope left for the Protestants is the rejection of the new constitution by the people of the Valais at the general meeting for deciding upon it, convoked for October 20. All other legal redress is closed against the Protestants, unless at the Helvetic Diet a majority of the states refuse to guarantee the new constitution."
