The treaty with the Miami Indians, which commenced about the 10th of October, was brought to a conclusion last Tuesday, without accomplishing the purchase of a single acre of their lands. We understand that the Indians positively refused to sell the whole of their lands and remove west of the Mississippi; but they offered to sell all their reserves north of the Wabash, and a strip of 7 miles in width, extending the whole length of their large reserve (29 miles) for five dollars per acre. The commissioners tried every means, but without effect, to induce them to sell at a lower price; and as the demands of the Indians so far exceeded the price they had been instructed to give, no alternative remained but for them to break up the treaty. The chiefs of this tribe having become in a great measure civilized, and mixing much with the whites, they are fully aware of the value of their lands, and will not be easily persuaded to sell them, except at a fair price; and the longer the purchase is delayed the more valuable will they become, and of course more difficult to purchase.—Fort Wayne Sentinel
