Miss Ruth Wampler, daughter of Co. Agent, Charles W Wampler, and the pioneer in hatching turkeys in incubators and raising them in brooders, has been designated by the members of the Virginia 4-H Clubs to make the Virginia turkey exhibit at the Madison Square Garden Poultry Show—another high distinction for a member of Rockingham Boys and Girls farm clubs.
Miss Wampler has been unusually successful this year in raising turkeys. Her profits are over $1,000. She raised 126 turkeys, which with the eggs she sold, have netted her a handsome income. Her egg sales amounted to $336.
Miss Wampler is the pioneer in the movement to raise turkeys on large scales as now employed in raising chickens. She uses an incubator to hatch the eggs and a brooder to raise the young turkeys. When the young turkeys come out of the shell, she moves her brooder houses to a section of the Wampler farm, where no chickens have foraged for food, and there she takes care of them. Her experiments have shown to be successful in raising turkeys they must be kept away from chickens.—Harrisonburg Record.
