Full Text
We are happy to learn that the mayor of the city has requested a meeting of the members of the city council, this morning at nine o'clock; from which we may reasonably expect, that measures will be adopted to relieve the present distresses of the French emigrants, who have lately taken refuge on our shores from St. Domingo. They have lost all their property;-- their friends have been obliged to submit to the merciless Sabre of cruel murderers and they themselves sentenced to a similar fate-fortunately they escaped, and in their deplorable situation, here seek an asylum-God forbid it should be denied them. Reports say, that these unfortunate persons are principally women and children, that they are in want of clothing and every other necessary of life; and indeed. from all the circumstances attendant on their present situation, call aloud for the immediate assistance of every person who reflects, that "he who giveth to the poor lendeth to the Lord."
