The wheels of the postoffice are in full motion to handle the biggest production job in the world, the processing of Christmas mail.
Here in the Boston Postal District each piece of the more than 200,000,000 pieces which will be received in the ten days prior to Christmas will require from seven to 20 handlings, depending upon place of mailing, point of address and other factors.
Success can be measured only by a yardstick of public cooperation. If this great volume of mail flows regularly day and night, and if reasonable good weather prevails, the past records of postal performance will be maintained and may even be surpassed, according to Postmaster Joseph P. W. Finn.
The 6,000 street letter boxes in the Boston Postal District are being filled for each collection by a responding public.
Postmaster Finn has expressed his gratitude for the assistance already evident by the public in their use of Local and Out-of-Town labels to designate their separation of Christmas cards.
Assurance has been given that street boxes will be collected as often as the needs warrant.
Packages for all parts of the country were due to have been mailed by December 10th at the latest. Air parcel post, special delivery and special handling are recommended for parcels not already deposited. Registry or insurance is suggested for articles of value.
Shoppers are urged to make their mail deposits or stamp purchases in the morning.
The use of first-class postage on Christmas cards is encouraged by postal officials in order that such mail can be given the extra advantages offered.
The local postoffice will be kept open on next Saturday, December 15 up to the regular weekday closing hour, if necessary to meet the needs for service.
