Now that the war for the Union has been fought to a successful termination, it is worth while to look back once in a while upon the course of the men in the North who opposed every measure taken by the Government to suppress the rebellion.

Their influence was all thrown in favor of the enemies of the Government, and as they live among us, and will try to worm themselves into favor again by a fawning sycophancy toward the prevailing sentiment of the country, it is well to hold them up to public scorn through the infamous record they have left behind them. The following are a few precious extracts from Copperhead leaders and papers:

Resolved, That we are unqualifiedly opposed to the further prosecution of this Abolition war; and believing that in its further prosecution, there awaits us only the murderous sacrifice of our national honor, we unhesitatingly declare that we are for peace, an armistice, and the settlement of our existing difficulties by compromise or negotiation through a national convention. A Resolution passed at a Democratic Convention in Vevay, February 14, 1863.

The next great defeat of the Abolition hordes will consolidate the whole Democratic strength of the North in open and determined resistance to the prosecution of the war.
Richmond Dispatch, Feb. 9th, 1863.

The Democracy will yet teach Abe Lincoln and his co-usurpers that the way of the transgressor is not easy:
-Hon. A. D. Dodge, of Iowa.

This is a damned Abolition war, and we believe Abe Lincoln is as much of a traitor as Jeff. Davis.-
Ashland (O) Democratic Union.

It (the Administration) has put arms in the hands of outlaws, thieves, murders, and traitors.-
Crawford County Forum, (Dem.) referring to our soldiers.

I say to you, my constituents, that as your representative, I will never vote one dollar, one man, or one gun to the administration of Abraham Lincoln to make war upon the South
-D. W. Voorhees, M. C. 7th District of Indiana, April 1861.

We tell them (Congress) that a Cromwell will rise up in their midst before they progress too far, who will bring their heads to the block without delay or mercy.-
Detroit Free Press, March 24.

Any man who volunteers to go to fight in this war ought to be shot. They are d--d Abolitionists.-
Kent County delegate to Michigan Democratic State Convention.

You black republicans have sent your hell hounds down South to devastate the country.-
George W. Peck, calling our soldiers hell hounds in a speech before the Lansing Democratic Association, March 1863.

History will relate that we (the North) manufactured the conflict, forced it to hot bed precocity, and invited it.-
Detroit Free Press, April 16th, 1862.

HUMILIATING, BUT JUST.- Some of our butternut exchanges do not seem to like the position in which their adherents were put in regard to the 4th of July, they seeming very generally throughout the country to have been expected by the present proprietors of the 4th of July, to stand back and wait until called. It must have been humiliating to men who in the old times made an equal claim to the glories of that day, to be put in such position; but a man who sympathized with the rebellion could expect nothing else, and certainly should not complain. The rebels themselves, by State action, in some cases, formally repudiated the 4th of July as well as Yankee Doodle; and those who sympathized with them, in so far, gave them aid and comfort. They relinquished their rights in those institutions, and if they ever regain them, it must be by the sufferance and permission of those who remained loyal. In the meantime, it is becoming in them to stand back. Especially is this the case when the glorious 4th is appropriated as an occasion upon which to do honor to the brave soldiers, whom the friends of these people, a very short time ago, would much rather have welcomed to their graves.-
