Full Text
Mr. Thomas Carlyle has discovered in England what is believed to be the only genuine portrait of John Knox. The forehead and brow are strong and prominent, the nose large, aquiline, and curved over a small upper lip; the mouth small, but with a strong under lip; the chin thin and small, and rendered more so by the sharp-pointed beard. The top of the head is bald, dome-like, with waving hair falling each side of it. What, however, is most remarkable in the face is the large luminous eye, filled with seriousness as unto death, while the mouth seems to curl a little as if in scorn of the idolatries and frivolities passing around him.
