WHITTIER AND BEECHER.
A correspondent says: "Not long since John G. Whittier rode with Henry Ward Beecher, in his private carriage, from Philadelphia to New York. On their way, Mr. Beecher's horses got wild and ran; and the lives of the travelers seemed, for the moment, to be in danger. Mr. B. endeavored to console his companion, in the midst of it, by saying the world would not miss them! No place too fearful for the Beecher fun."
But we imagine our friend Whittier, at such a moment, neither enjoyed the "Beecher fun," nor the fun of such a Jehu drive. C.
