What is this article about?
In Mecklenburg County's recent gubernatorial election, Republicans gained 617 votes over 1876, while Democrats lost only 139 for Jarvis compared to Vance. The increase came from new colored voters; Democrats failed to mobilize new white voters, leading to a reduced majority for their county ticket but serving as a warning.

The fact is, the Republicans brought forward a larger number of new colored voters than the Democrats expected, and the Democrats neglected to marshal and organize the additional strength of new white voters they were entitled to. The Democrats of the county never realized the danger until a few days before the election, and then it was too late to bring all their new voters forward for registration or stir up the over-confident and negligent to the importance of going to the polls. While the Democratic county ticket is elected by a reduced majority, it will serve as a good warning to Democrats in future elections.
Large majorities are dangerous to any party.
Gov Jarvis may feel complimented at receiving in this county so near the vote of Gov. Vance in 1876.
