Full Text

Mr. Wirt, (says the Long Island Inquirer) the late Attorney General of the United States, has purchased a large tract of land in Florida, for the purpose of cultivating the sugar cane. Instead of employing slaves, as is usual for such labor he has made an arrangement with several hundred German emigrants, who go to Mr. Wirt's estate under the charge of Lieutenant Goldsborough. This may be considered a good beginning, and may in time be the means of substituting free white labor where slaves only have been employed. We are desirous to see an end put to slavery in this free country, but not sooner than shall be compatible with the rights and privileges granted by our laws to the owners of such property.
