A CANDID CONFESSION.
We have all along told our readers that the charges made by the "whigs" against the late administration were false, as their own professed love of economy was hypocritical. Finding it no longer "necessary to keep up the delusion," the National Intelligencer, the leading organ of Federalism and Whiggery at Washington City, comes out boldly and confesses the humbug. The following is the language of that paper:
"We have no idea of any reduction of the aggregate amount of the expenditures of the Government. An augmentation of the revenue to some extent is therefore inevitable."
This is the reform and retrenchment promised by the "whigs." So far from confining their expenses within the bounds allotted by an administration they had the audacity to accuse of extravagance, they now say they must augment the revenue. They must have more money than even an administration they accused of wasting the public money! What, confess their duplicity with the most amazing effrontery, and feel no dread of the vengeance of the people. This is almost too much for the gulls.
