A Brutal Assault.

CHICAGO, Oct. 20.-A curious assault
was made to-night upon an ex-gambler
named J. B. Quinn. Two men held him
up in a dark spot on the edge of Union
park and compelled him to strip to the
waist and poured a bucket of liquid tar
over the upper portion of his body and
then added some feathers by way of
adornment. His assailants then knocked
him down and kicked him repeat-
edly. He was found by some people
strolling through the park and the
police notified, but with no trace of the
assailants. Quinn has been posing as a
"reformed gambler," writing a book on
gambler methods and is supposed to have
incurred the enmity of the fraternity.
although sporting men scout the idea of
any such motives having provoked attack
