Prosperous Times Turning the People Away From the Silver Craze.
Hazlehurst, Ga., Aug. 28.—The merchants here are getting in their fall stocks of goods, and they expect to do a paying business this season. The farmers are more than cheerful. They have made a bountiful crop of corn, and they are hopeful of getting a fair price for their cotton. In fact the future prospects are so encouraging that the silver question has been relegated to the rear. Some of the local statesmen who have been condemning Mr. Cleveland, and preaching "free silver" are finding out how little they knew of that question. Free silver advocates and populism are rapidly vanishing. It seems that the people have turned their backs upon the panic of 1893 and its records, and are now looking the prosperous future in the face.
Mr. Ed Burdette, one of the most competent mill men in the south, has been appointed general manager of the large saw mill here. The mills are perhaps the largest and best equipped in the state. They give employment to over 175 hands. They saw daily 65,000 feet of lumber, and their planer planes over 30,000 feet per day. Mr. J. E. Claud, manager of the manufacturing department, conducted your correspondent through the various departments of this immense industry.
The mills have all the latest and most improved labor saving machinery. The logs are turned by what Mr. Claud designates as "steam negroes," and he says they are always there, and, unlike the average negro, they never wish to attend picnics or festivals. The company has a railroad completed sixteen miles out in Coffee county, and they completed the survey of the Waycross Air Line from Waycross to connect with this road last week. The connecting link will be finished as soon as possible. It will be a short line from Hazlehurst to Waycross, being forty miles shorter than the present rail route.
This road will open up a fine section of country and doubtless will pay its owners handsomely.
