Full Text

One day last week a little fracas happened between four or five sailors and the recruiting party here enlisting men for the frigate Constitution, it was however short, and no damage done, the populace enraged at the dastardly conduct of those persons attempting to impede the recruiting party, took the matter in hand immediately and made the opposers quit the ground in a trice; at the request of the officers of police a warrant was issued, and three of the aggressors were arrested, and arraigned in the Court House before the Hon. Nathaniel Adams, Esq. who after hearing the evidence in support of the complaint—and the defence, decreed them guilty of a high handed offence, and ordered them to procure two sufficient bondmen each, to be bound in the sum of 500 dollars, and each of the aggressors in the sum of 1000 dols: for their appearance to take a further trial at the next Superior Court of Judicature; no person appearing to bail them, the sheriff cheerfully committed them to prison. A large number of people assembled to hear the decree of the Justice, who seemed all to agree, as though crying out with one voice "righteous judgment."—We have no doubt but they will be severely punished for their imperious conduct. Two of the desperadoes, who dared the attempt to insult the authority of the States, we are happy to find were foreigners, and no doubt seduced the others, who were too easily led astray.
