KELLOGG never was elected Governor of Louisiana, and nobody pretends that he ever was. He is maintained Governor of Louisiana by United States bayonets ordered thither by Grant. Will somebody please define usurpation? If a scoundrel can thus be maintained Governor of Louisiana who was never elected its Governor, what is to hinder another scoundrel from being maintained Governor of New York at need, by Grant's bayonets, although never elected its Governor? And how or wherein is such an usurpation less infamous than for Grant to maintain himself President of the United States if not elected President? And how does usurpation in Louisiana concern a citizen of the United States less than such usurpation in New York, or such usurpation at Washington? These are questions which freemen might take an interest in. But cravens need not concern themselves with politics. Let them have peace. -New York World.
