Destructive Fire.--Between 7 and 8 o'clock on Saturday evening, a fire started in the second story of Messrs. Taylor & Churchill's hardware establishment, No. 29 Magazine street, between Common and Gravier. The firemen were promptly on hand, but, water being scarce as usual, they succeeded only in saving the surrounding property, consisting of heavy wholesale houses in different lines of business; the hardware store went. The houses of C. Hale & Co., dry-goods dealers, and N. C. Folger & Son, clothiers, adjoined the burning building, and were saved by the gallant work of the firemen. Taylor & Churchill's stock was worth upwards of $70,000, and insured for only $30,000; the building was worth $10,000, and insured. The wholesale house of Peet, Simms & Co., was considerably damaged, or the goods therein, by the water thrown; the damage being estimated at about $10,000. The whole loss falls little short of $100,000. The fire is reported to have started accidentally, by the bursting of a gas-pipe.
