THE C. & W. M. EXTENSION.

Bids For the Traverse City Line to be

Opened Today.

The C. & W. M. extension which the

company proposes to build from Baldwin

to Traverse City, has called out

plenty of bidders for the contract of

constructing the line. At 5 o'clock last

night twenty-four bids had been received.

Among other bidders were:

Winston Bros. and McArthur Bros., of

Minneapolis; Foley & Ross, of Manitoba,

Donnelly & Gaffney, of St. Paul; J.

H. McLean & Son, of Coldwater; D. Mc-

Dermid & Co., of Toronto, Canada;

Shepherd, Siems & Co., of Minneapolis;

Dewey & Hebron, of Chicago; Fitzgerald

& Co., of Lincoln, Neb.; P. Brennen

& Co., of St. Paul, and McDonald Brothers,

of this city. The bids were to have

been opened yesterday, but they were

not, and it is not probable that they

will be opened before noon today.

The proposed line is seventy-five

miles long, and extends through

some of the best hard timber land in

the State, but there is not a town or

village the whole distance. The building

of the road includes the construction

of a large iron bridge over the

Manistee river. The bridge will be

1200 feet long and 80 feet high. The

road will be laid with steel rails and

will be first-class in every particular.

It is thought that the road will cost

at least $750,000, and is to be completed

by the first of July, 1890. This will

necessitate some hard work on the part

of the contractors to get the road in

good condition by that time.
