Full Text

General Butler, one day last week made a speech before the House of Representatives of the Pennsylvania Legislature.

Among other things, he said:

"We had conquered the South--conquered them of all their rights, except one--the right to be hanged. He had impoverished himself and shed the blood of a brother and son in defence of the great principles for which they had fought, and he for one would never yield, unless some of the leaders in the rebellion were hung. The good and brave President Lincoln had, by public acts and private conversation, said that Jeff. Davis and Gen. Lee should be hung. But Andrew Johnson said these traitors should be admitted to their seats, and help to make laws for us."
