Some of the Indians at the Congress held at one of the Mohawk Castles in April last, who had been at Montreal, told Sir William Johnson, that the French were in great Want of Provisions: and that the Governor of Canada said to them, Children, I am now reduced to one Leg: I expect Reinforcements from France: If they get up the River St. Lawrence before the English, I may perhaps preserve that one Leg; If not, then I shall lose it; therefore you must take Care of yourselves. It was Conjectured, that he had neither Provisions, Goods, nor Ammunition to give to the Indians, and therefore did not desire to see them, which occasioned his making such a Speech.
