ACP FINANCING AVAILABLE FOR WEED CONTROL

Farmers who need assistance in the control of noxious weeds on low value lands are reminded by Eugene Heikes, Extension Service weed specialist at Montana State College, that payments are available under the Agricultural Conservation Program in Montana for this purpose.

Listed as a special practice under the ACP, it applies to weed control on ditch banks, range lands established perennial grass pastures or areas where weed control will improve permanent vegetative cover.

It also applies to certain perennial weeds on cropland that is so badly infested that the cost of controlling the weeds would be greater than the land could justify.

Entitled, "Controlling Noxious Weeds to Permit Growth of Adequate, Desirable Vegetative Cover," the practice provides for ACP payments to cover half the cost of controlling noxious weeds.

Counties are approved for the practice by the State ASC office on the basis of individual county justification, Heikes said. A number of counties were approved in 1958 and will be automatically approved for 1959 participation. Additional counties can also be approved if they make the necessary request and show that some organized effort is being made to control weeds, he said.

For more detailed information, Heikes suggests that farmers inquire at their local ASC office or county Extension office.
