Full Text

SALE OF PLANK ROADS.—The Charlotte and Taylorsville Plank Road was sold at auction last week for $500 bought by the securities to the bonds of the Company. The Western Plank Road, running from Charlotte to Lincolnton, was also sold at public auction in this place recently for $12,000—bid in by the securities. Plank Roads don't seem to pay in this part of the State. The reason is, in dry weather the common roads are as good as the plank, and consequently the latter are not used to any great extent. In the eastern part of the State, among the sand hills, Plank Roads are generally used at all times. One thing that has been against Plank Roads in this section, is, we think, they were not sufficiently graded—and further, oak plank are inferior to pine for road purposes.

Event Details

Two plank roads sold at auction: Charlotte to Taylorsville for $500 last week, bought by securities to the bonds of the Company; Western from Charlotte to Lincolnton for $12,000 recently, bid in by securities. Plank roads unprofitable here due to dry weather making common roads sufficient, insufficient grading, and oak plank inferior to pine; more used in eastern sandy areas.
