On the 16th October, a tremendous Volcano poured forth stones, and lava from a mountain, situated in the Beanjean Regencies, about 200 miles from Batavia, a seaport on the north coast of Java. Five thousand natives were buried by stones and ashes: Three hundred have been found most dreadfully burnt, and but faint hopes are entertained of the recovery of most of them. This place was one of the most beautiful and highly cultivated sections of the interior of this rich island. Coffee and rice grew luxuriantly and plentifully there.
