BOSTON, Sept. 28.-The Herald's London correspondent cables an interview with ex-Mayor Prince. He asked whether it was Mr. Prince's intention to accept the nomination of Lieutenant-governor tendered him by the Massachusetts Democratic convention. He replied that he will decline the nomination because he has temporarily withdrawn from politics in consequence of illness in his family. He returns to America Oct. 17, in the Cephalonia. After the meeting of the national Democratic committee on Feb. 22, he may go back to Europe for a lengthened period. The officers of the Democratic State committee profess to be satisfied with the condition of affairs. One of them said Mr. Prince was nominated at the request of the old-line Democrats, who had given assurances that he would accept: that the committee had communicated with him since his nomination, but would go on just as if no doubt of his acceptance had never been raised until such time as he may see fit, if he should so decide, to notify the committee of his refusal. The Democratic convention neglected to give the State committee the usual authority to fill vacancies on the ticket. At Democratic headquarters, to-night, it was said that if Mr. Prince declined, the committee would select another candidate for Lieutenant governor. The talk of calling another convention to nominate another candidate was styled sheer nonsense.
